Teaching Methods

Theoretical-practical classes for the detailed exposition of the fundamental concepts, principles and theories of the topic of this course and the solving of some ilucidative practical problems that help the students to understand the theoretical exposition. Illustrative examples and case studies will be given and discussed.

Learning Outcomes

To provide the students with:

- The understanding of the main environmental problems related to anthropic activities, namely engineering works, and the role played by Environmental Engineering;

- The understanding of the specificities of sectoral environmental impacts and of the fundamental principles and methodologies applied to identify, predict, evaluate and minimize those impacts;

- The understanding of the importance of Environmental Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment, and of the principles, procedures and legal and institutional framework related to the development of those processes.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

1. Introduction. Challenges and role of environmental engineering related to the main environmental problems of anthropic origin, in particular engineering projects.

2. Sectoral environmental impacts. Fundamental principles and methodologies applied to identify, predict, evaluate and minimize sectoral impacts. Context of application and scale of impacts.

3. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as a tool in environmental management and policies; context, objectives, organization, main phases and activities. Institutional and legal framework; international principles in EIA. Environmental Impact Studies. The role of EIA in sectoral decision support, namely regarding planning, design, construction, operation and deactivation of projects.

4. Strategic Environmental Assessment (Plans and Programs).

5. Multidisciplinary working teams: participation and management.
