Recommended Prerequisites

Background on General Chemistry.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical (by using multimedia projector) and theoretical-practical training to discuss case-studies.

Learning Outcomes

Students must recognize environmental issues related with solid, liquid and gaseous wastes; it is expected that after this unit students have the ability to propose appropriate processes of waste treatments.

They should be able to recognize and apply basic concepts and principles in Environmental Chemistry; to apply the acquired knowledge in accordance with a professional approach; to have the ability to solve problems within the field of Environmental Chemistry; to have the ability to characterize an effluent, to determine its source and propose appropriate treatment techniques; to make decisions based on scientific grounds; to be capable to communicate and to pass information by using a clear speech and appropriate wording; to have acquired skills that allow to present a communication, and to argue as well, for an expert audience ; to acquire skills to enable self-learning throughout life.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

1- Liquid effluents. Industrial wastewaters; Effluent characterization and its dependence on industry (surface treatment, textil, etc.); Domestic wastewater; Wastewater treatment (principles and techniques); Discussion of case-studies.

2- Solid wastes. Municipal solid wastes; MSW Disposal; Industrial wastes; Separation, transformation, and recycling of waste materials (materials separation and processing technologies, thermal conversion Technologies, biological and chemical conversion technologies); Solid waste management, minimization, recovery and recycling strategies.

3- Gaseous Effluents. Fundamentals (sources and principal types of gaseous pollutants); Characterization of effluents according to different sources; Effects of atmospheric pollution; Techniques for treatment of gaseous effluents; Analysis and discussion of case-studies; Air quality management.
