Part 1. Thermodynamics
Scope of chemical thermodynamics. Review of fundamental concepts.
Topics in thermodynamics of solutions. Thermodynamic and molecular interpretation of solution processes. Potentialities and limitations. Thermodynamic cycle: solution, sublimation, solvation. "hydrophobic hydration" and "hydrophobic interaction".
Topics in phase equilibria: one component, two component and three component systems.
Chemical reactions: equilibrium conditions. Effect of controlled variables in the yield of chemical reactions.
Experimental methods.
Part II. Kinetics
Scope and framework of Chemical Kinetics. Reaction rate. Factors influencing the rate of reaction.
Experimental methods. Orders and rate constants.
Collisions and molecular dynamics. Reactivity in thermalized systems. Structure and reactivity relationships.
Unimolecular reactions. Elementary reactions in solution. Acid-base catalysis.
