Recommended Prerequisites

Students must have a strong background in structural mechanics and strength of materials. They should also have a good knowledge about structural analysis.

Teaching Methods

Classes run under theoretical and practical. In the classes are presented the theoretical concepts and the code formulations for the design of current portal frame buildings or multi-storey buildings. Simultaneously, some illustrative examples are solved. Students participate actively in the process of formation, being asked to present solutions to the proposed problems. Occasionally students are invited to attend lectures by visiting specialists. Tutorial lessons (22.5 hours) will be to answer questions.

Learning Outcomes

- Understanding of theoretical and normative models applicable to the analysis and design of composite steel-concrete structures.

- Specific knowledge about the European design of structures - Eurocodes.

- Ability to define solutions to solve specific problems of calculation and design of structures.

- Ability to use automatic calculation methods and software.

- Ability to design a composite steel-concrete structure.

- Capacity for written and oral exposure.

1 Introduction to the design of composite steel-concrete structures. Examples of structural projects.

2 Basic requirements for the design of steel steel-concrete structures according to European regulations.

3 Materials: Concrete, Structural steel; Steel rebars; Prestressed steel

4 Analysis of concrete, steel and mixed steel-concrete structures: General concepts; global modeling and analysis; classification of cross sections of composite elements.

5 Design of concrete elements

6 Design of steel-concrete composite beams

7 Design of composite steel-concrete columns

8 Design of steel steel-concrete slabs.
