Teaching Methods

The teaching methods to mobilize will be essentially active, with broad student participation both in defining the content of the sessions both on its dynamization. In addition to the first and the last sessions, whose contents are predefined, the remining will be defined according to the activities in which the students’ involvement takes place. The cu is designed as a series of collaborative workshops that are composed of discussions, hands-on activities and practical tips how to reach key benefits of extracurricular activities. 

Learning Outcomes

This course provides the framework and stimulus for the diversification activities, perceived as learning opportunities outside the classroom, with a view to the expansion of students' knowledge-building capacity, through their involvement in activities that respond to their intellectual, social, cultural or other interests. It is expected that this involvement contributes to the strengthen of their knowledge about the social reality, self-confidence and creativity and to the improvement of their transversal skills, namely communicational and social skills.

The aim is to show the benefits and risks of extracurricular activities (AE) - to promote a better academic performance; broadening horizons of life and career; valuing the curriculum, today a differentiating element; increase the likelihood of success in competitive contests; and risks - increasing load and making time management more difficult; potentiating the violation of rules of academic ethics.

Syllabus

This course unit will begin with a set of introductory sessions designed to familiarize students with the organization of work during the semester and the respective standards and requirements. In the course of the face-to-face sessions, will be provided information to help students to deepen their reflection on the advantages and risks of extracurricular activities (EA), and best practice examples will be made available. Characteristics and strategies of EA with which the students are involved will be object of collaborative work in the classroom. Some sessions will be also organized to help improve some student transversal skills such as problem solving, oral and written communication, teamwork and the ethical issues raised by social relations within organizations. At the end of the semester, the students should present orally, in the classroom, their assessment of the EA and their reflection on the acquired learnings.
