Infection and Immunity

Recommended Prerequisites

Biology, Biochemistry I, General Microbiology. The student should have reading profeciency of English because some texts will be in English.

Teaching Methods

Primaily lectures. The so-called T/P explain metodogies for microbiological quality control; the students have an oral presentation and at the end of the couse show and explain a poster on one disease per group.

Learning Outcomes

This class provides basic knowledge of immunolgy, antibiotic therapy and infectious diseases. The immune system, inate and acquired, is explained with the understanding that it is required to defend vertebrates (mostly humans) from organisms that cause disease. The students will be able to understand how the inate and acquired imunity acts on microorganisms and the mechanisms microorganisms (aerobic, anaerobic, extracellular, intracellular and virus) use to cause disease.

Syllabus

Innate and acquired immunity. Physical and chemical barriers, Normal flora. Antibiotics Anti-viral antibiotics. Concepts of antigens and antibodies. Specificity, Monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. IgG, IgA, IgE, IgD and IgM. Antibodies of other vertebrates, Primary and secondary response, Genetic diversity. Clonal selection. Immune system cells. Histocompatibility. Formation of T- and B-cells. Interactions between linfocites and macrophages. Immediate and delayed hypersensitivity. Complement. Passive immunity. Autoimmune diseases and immune deficiencies. Organisms that cause disease. Exotoxins and endotoxins; vaccines. Pathogenicity mechanisms. Microbiological quality control water, food, air and surfaces
