Teaching Methods

Lectures with detailed explanation of the concepts, principles and fundamental theories, supported by audiovisual media. Resolution of some practical exercises, helping to frame the subjects and put them in tune with the students understanding. Discussion and clarification of doubts concerning the study or the development of the works.

The evaluation consists of intermediate written evaluation tests, allowing the final approval in the unit, and a final exam.

Learning Outcomes

The main goal is the acquisition and development of basic concepts of Classic Mechanics, providing the students with the competences required for subsequent learnings in the domain of Structural Mechanics. Topics related to Vectorial Mechanics and Geometry of Masses, extensively used in later curricular units of that pedagogic area, are particularly developped. Accessorily, general knowledge relevant for the traditional Engineerings, even if not sistematically used in Civil Engineering, are provided, in order to promote the understanding of physical phenomena falling within that domain.

As main outputs of this curricular unit, the students shall be able to formulate and solve problems of reduction of systems of forces and static equilibrium of rigid bodies and/or systems of material points, as well as determining, reducing and transforming the characterizing parameters of any planar continuous or discontinuous geometric system.
