Recommended Prerequisites
Basic knowledge on the use of operating systems and graphical computer interfaces. Practical and concetual skills in word processing areas and in the design and operation of data structures in the context of spreadsheets and databases. Some knowledge on the introductorial subjects in information systems, namely in data analysis topics, are also relevant in the scope of this course.
Teaching Methods
Theoretical issues are explained in oral lessons complemented with real time computer screen projections and fully cover the syllabus items. Practical lessons are computer-based lessons, where the students develop example projects in different GIS areas using ArcGIS software.
Learning Outcomes
This curricular unit focuses on the study of the characteristics of spatial information and the techniques associated with its representation, analysis and processing. Students are expected to acquire the necessary knowledge to develop projects using appropriate information systems to represent highly structured information with strong spatial components and to be able to use this representation as a starting point for the development of analytical processes, combining spatial and monodimensional information, to obtain results to communicate intuitively to the user through the powerful graphic tools that this technology offers. As a secondary objective is the acquisition of the practical knowledge necessary to master the interface of typical software packages in the areas of geospatial information management, in order to explore and apply its functionalities in the approach to practical cases in the real world.
