Teaching Methods
The curricular unit is taught based on theoretical-practical classes of exposure, discussion and conceptual deepening of the programmatic axes. Classes develop the contents of the program and are organized in order to promote collective discussion through the reading of a set of sociology and other social sciences bibliographical references. Some classes will count on the presence of guest speakers. Students are encouraged to present their own topics in articulation with the professor.
Learning Outcomes
The curricular unit aims to problematize, in a first moment, the historical evolution of the relation between rural and urban space to frame and discuss the processes of social, economic and territorial transformation, with emphasis on the main transformations that have occurred in the contemporary cities.
Students should be able to: a) know the history of world urbanization, know how to define "city", problematize "city and metropolis" and characterize urban rhythms and urban cultures; b) discuss the current sociological problems of urbanity; c) discuss the end of dichotomies and polarizations: urban-rural, sector-territory.

NoSyllabus
Syllabus starts from the analysis of the transformations of the rural space, analyzes the processes of redefinition and reconfiguration that cross this social space to subsequently give emphasis to the analysis of the "cities" as study object. It also addresses the modern interactions - "urbanities" - established in and with the urban space, with emphasis on a set of emerging contexts and disparities.
Syllabus also focuses on the comprehension of the phenomena that influence cities in contemporary times, discussing the concept of city and the phenomenon of cities' internationalization. It analyses the role of social actors and urban activism in the (re)definition of the city and urban life.
