Recommended Prerequisites

  Basic instruments of sociology.  

Teaching Methods

Side by side with regular lectures, students are supposed to participate in discussions, make oral presentations (accompanied by short written pieces of 400-800 words) and moderate one working session. Videos, literary documents, and readings from various disciplinary origins are currently used and submitted to general comment and interpretation. They all help students to formulate the broad idea for the final essay (3,000 to 5,000 words) they are supposed to write by the end of the semester.

Learning Outcomes

The study unit intends to help educate students on issues related to the modern urban condition.

There are five major purposes of the study unit:

(i) to introduce students to the major historical, political, and social dimensions of the urban phenomenon;

(ii) to offer a broad view on democratic city governance;

(iii) to provide methodological tools adequate to urban analysis;

(iv) to bring a broad understanding of current major topics and concepts of urban studies
