Recommended Prerequisites

Knowledge of the basic constructs of Sport Pedagogy.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with Power Point presentations. Synthesis of reference papers by the students. Debate about empirical reality.

The students must be able to deal with research instruments, to use them with their athletes, to analyze and interpret the results as individuals and as a community of practice.

Learning Outcomes

The unit presents a critical overview of the state of the art about the contemporary issues in Sport and of the role of the coach as a central agent in the development process. Existing research about the topic.

Analysis of the current models of coaches’ education.

Competencies: to be able to analyse and assess projects and programmes; to create intervention projects and programmes for coaches, other agents and families.

1] Ethical problems in contemporary sport; changes in the structure and contents of sport. [2] Constructivism, non linearity and the challenges for the coach [3] Theoretical foundations of the study of the coaches: models of coach education; competencies and competence: the needed balance. [4] The coach-athlete relationship as a function of context; qualitative and quantitative research. [5] Social ecologies and the role of significant others; relationship between coaches, families, peers and other agents.
