Teaching Methods

Theoretical-practical classes, individual and group tasks specific to the selected contents. Reading and critical analysis of scientific articles. Research in specific databases and use of management software for bibliographic references.The evaluation process recommended in the curricular unit promotes the applied mastery of the subjects covered, through problem solving and presentation of a proposal.

Learning Outcomes

This curricular unit is oriented towards the development of competences for planning, systematizing and organizing scientific research in the context of sports sciences. It is intended to provide the student with solid knowledge of the analysis, interpretation and communication of the results, discussing its relevance in view of the current state of knowledge in the scope of sports training, favoring a better understanding of sports training phenomena.

By completing the curricular unit, students should be able to: identify the main study designs as well as the ethical and deontological issues associated with them; know and be able to search the main scientific databases organizing the available literature in a systematic way; Handle bibliographic reference management software; know the scientific writing process.

[1] Scientific method and its application to Sport Sciences; Ethical research questions; Study designs (definitions and classification: Experimental / Quasi-experimental, Selective and Observational.

[2] Developing a literature search in databases (Web of Science, Scopus, Pubmed, Sportdiscus); Use of reference management software (EndNote, Mendley).

[3] Critical analysis of a scientific article.

[4] Systematic literature review: definition of research question, databases, keywords, inclusion / exclusion criteria, article quality assessment, data extraction and synthesis.

[5] Scientific writing process - phase planning. Structure of academic work (article, thesis, dissertation, oral / poster communication): title, authors, abstract, keywords, introduction, material and methods, results, discussion, conclusion, bibliography.
