Teaching Methods

Traditional classes, with presentation of fundamental concepts and techniques; classes for presentation and discussion of case studies; group projects in teams of 5-7 students; tutorial classes to support group projects; classes for presentation of group projects, involving discussion, self-assessment and peer assessment.

Learning Outcomes

The Management Processes course was designed to provide students with a global view of how organisations work, develop strategic thinking in the analysis of issues relevant to organizations and acquire specific knowledge about their main functions. To this end, the course is viewed as an organisation of people functioning as a learning community, with defined objectives and mutual commitments assumed by students and the teacher.

The strategic positioning of this course is guided by the following topics:

- Mission: To contribute, through a participatory learning process, to the training of engineers with entrepreneurial skills and capable of understanding how organisations work.

- Vision: To be a permanent reference course in teaching management and fostering entrepreneurship in future engineers, under continuous improvement.

1. Introduction to the Concept of the Corporation. Objectives and missions of organizations. The different management functions. 2. Introduction to Entrepreneurship. From ideas to business. The Business Model and Business Plan. 3. Marketing and New Product Development. Market studies. The marketing mix. Marketing 5.0. New product development. 4. Leadership, Human Resource Management and Decision Making. 5. Strategic Planning and Management. The Concept of Corporate Strategy. Strategic thinking, strategic planning and strategic management. The Balanced Scorecard. 6. Financial Management. 6.1. Accounting. The Balance Sheet and the Income Statement. 6.2. Financial Analysis. Liquidity, Solvency and Profitability. Ratio Analysis. 6.3. Investment Project Analysis. Feasibility studies. Cash flow forecast. Time value of money. Measures of project profitability: net present value, internal rate of return and payback period.
