Linear Algebra and Anlytical Geometry, Numerical Methods, Strength of Materials.

Teaching Methods

The traditional blackboard lecture style is used for the motivation and detailed exposition of the fundamental ideas, concepts and methods; this is combined with the discussion of the different solutions. The student is confronted with a study case -- designing the structure of a building --, which is developed in the classes, with the help of a structural analysis program, with the aim of suggesting to him lines of disciplined thought in dealing with different problems and to promote his autonomy. During the semester, each student develops a project with the help of the mentioned program.

Learning Outcomes

To establish and apply the basic principles for the conception and design of the structure of current buildings, having in view the non structural background of the students. The five stages of the project are covered: conception, analysis, design, detailing and final report. The relevance of the architecture project and the required compatibility of every project associated to a new building is clarified. The basis for the definition and modelling of the actions are presented as well as the initial sizing of the structural members. The model and analysis are performed with the help of a structural analysis program made available to the students.
