Recommended Prerequisites

Engineering Geology

Soil Mechanics

Stability of Geotechnical Structures

Geotechnical Works.

Teaching Methods

Classes with detailed exposure, using audio-visual media, fundamental concepts, principles and theories with the resolution of some practical exercises that meet all the needs of framing students with the subject. Theoretical-practical classes in which students, with the guidance of the teacher, develop some practical work for the application of the subjects taught. Laboratory classes with execution or, in some cases, observation or presentation of laboratory soil tests with subsequent treatment of results.

Learning Outcomes

The main aim is exploring, with some detail, the mechanical properties of soils and developing aproproate mathmatical models that describe and simutate the behaviour of soils. At rhe end of this unit the student will adquire the skills to calculate the soil resistance and regidity parametres and their application to pretical problems.

Review of soil classification and characterization, shear resistance and deformation.

Realization in the laboratory of an edometric test and determination of soil consolidation and compressibility parametrs.

Drained resistance of sands and clays, peak and residual shear resistance. Undrained shear resistance. Representation of stress paths in triaxial space and space (p; q), Sress invariants.

Realization of triaxial, vane and cone penetrometer tests in the laboratory its interpretation and determination of the mechanical properties.
