Recommended Prerequisites

Engineering Geology, Soil Mechanics, Stability of Geotechnical Structures.

Teaching Methods

Theorectical classes with detailed presentation of the concepts, principles and fundamental theories related to the behavior of foundations and earth retaining structures. Specific cases are presented, with particular emphasis to the importance of in-situ testing and constructive methods. Problems are solved during the presentation.

Theorectical-pratical classes where the students, with guidance from the lecturer, solve exercises from the curricular unit's support material.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this curricular unit, the student shall have mastered the fundamental concepts regarding the conception and geotechnical design of shallow and deep foundations, as well as flexible cantilever and single supported retaining walls. These concepts include the definition of the ground investigation that supports the design.

The safety of geotechnical works is presented in agreement with the structural Eurocodes.
