Recommended Prerequisites

A solid knowledge on Development Psychology and Psychological Assessment is highly recommended. The student must have good English reading skills.

Teaching Methods

Oral presentations and discussions in two distinct phases:

Initially, the teaching team will present contents that goes back to basic knowledge considered as theoretical support for the the learning process in this unit, and then it will be up to the students to prepare presentations recommended by the teachers to work in class in order to promote personal appropriation of knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

Understand the ecosystem view of human development.

Recognize transition and change processes throughout development.

Mastering the basic concepts of all Counseling Models presented during classes (Cognitive, Cognitive Behavioral, Systemic, Psychodynamic, C. Rogers, Adler, Gestalt, Reality, Existentialist, Feminist).

Recognize distinctions and points of contact between each Model and theoretical perspectives each one sustains.

Recognize the importance of a multicultural perspective to understand human choices and human potential.

Understand psychological counseling under cultural, historical and political conditions of each situation.

Demonstrate techniques in Psychological Counseling.

Articulate the processes of Psychological Evaluation with the Processes of Psychological Conseling.

Apply strategies of Psychological Counseling in the context of human development.

Select strategies of psychological counseling approach in crisis situations.

Syllabus

1. Models of Counseling and Human Development - ecosystem models:

Classical clinical models (Behavioral, Cognitive Behavioral, Systemic, Psychodynamic)

Models by author (Rogers - Person Centered, Adler - Individual Psychotherapy, Glasser - Reality Therapy)

Gestalt Model; Existentialist Model; Feminist Model.

2. Issues related to multicultural, religious, socio-political conditioning factors implied in psychological intervention and in psychological support or counseling relationship. Limitations and Ethical Discussions according to each situation.

3. Fundamental and applied research in Psychological Counseling.

4. Psychological Assessment vs. Psychological Counseling.

5. Intervention strategies in human development systems:

6. Counselor characteristics and behaviors that influence the counseling process

7. Evidence-based counseling strategies and techniques for prevention and intervention

8. Identification of evidence-based counseling practice.
