Recommended Prerequisites

All previous subjects and good domain of the Portuguese and English anguage.

Teaching Methods

Lectures: expository method supported by “hand outs” (Power Point slides, available as PDF documents);  research work in and out of the classroom and respective synthesis reports under the faculty supervision; case simulations; role play; critical thinking and problem solving.     

Learning Outcomes

To develop theoretical and historical knowledge about the main ethical and legal issues in the practice and research in the area of Educational, Developmental and Counseling Psychology.

To be able to explain in an articulated manner (to other professionals, in the context of multidisciplinary teams, and to the general public) the ethical and normative standards of Psychology (in general) and specifically in the area of Educational, Developmental and Counseling Psychology.

To develop and practice skills through simulation (or role play) of situations involving ethical dilemas;

To stimulate and apply critical thinking on solving dilemmas thah might occur in the area of specialty, selected by teachers and students.

Syllabus

1. Moral, Ethics and Deontology

1.1 From the ethics of virtues to the ethics of rational criticism. Current ethical relativism.

1.2 Ethical-philosophical bases of the deontological codes: Responsibility, equity, integrity, respect, competence. Historical notes.

2. Ethics in Psychology

2.1 OPP Code of Ethics - Specific case studies.

2.2 Synthesis reports on ethics in context: educational, development and counseling.

3. Ethics in educational and social research

3.1 Historical notes on the ethics of research and experimentation in Psychology: the classic cases of Milgram's experiences and the experience of the prisoner (U. Stanford);

3.2 Generic and specific ethical issues in quantitative and qualitative research

4. Ethical decision-making models and their application to real and hypothetical situations.
