Teaching Methods

Lectures on theoretical matters, presentation and discussion of examples of practical application, problems solving in tutorial and autonomous way. Course evaluation consists of a final examination and report.

Learning Outcomes

The objectives of the course are:

- To describe and explain the fundamental concepts for water treatment technology.

- To describe and explain the fundamental concepts for wastewater treatment processes and technolog

- To develop problem-solving learning skills and data handling and manipulation.

- To develop teamwork and communication skills required for multi-disciplinary civil and environmental engineering projects.

Syllabus

1. Characteristics of raw waters. Drinking water standards;

2. General principles for the establishment of water treatment schemes; Coagulation and flocculation; Sedimentation and flotation; Filtration; Disinfection and disinfection by-products; Water stabilisation.

3. Urban wastewaters treatment aims, classification, levels, and typical schemes.

4. Preliminary and primary treatment; secondary or biological treatment:

5. Parameters and criteria design. 

6. Advanced wastewater treatment (chemical unit processes): nutrients and refractary constituints removal; disinfection.

7. Water and WasteWater Treatment plants exploitation.
