Recommended Prerequisites

This course recommends as prerequesite knowledge in the field of psychopathology.

Teaching Methods

Expositive and interrogative method, large group discussion, use of audio-visuals for the projection of diagrams with topics of the contents taught. Use of role-play. Visualization of web platforms and apps (use of ehealth resources).

It is also proposed to conduct researches, in small groups, which are presented and discussed in class by the students. Occasionally, specialists invited to speak on specific topics will be present in class.

Learning Outcomes

An important movement of Cognitive-Behavioral Approach (CBA) has been its application to health and illness (mental and physical).

CBT has been used successfully in several health problems in order to promote health and health-related quality of life and prevent illness, developing protective factors and minimizing risk factors and promoting health behaviours, healthy life styles, enabling individuals, families and communities to improve health and self-care.

CBA has also proven effective in managing stress, particularly 3rd Wave approaches.

Syllabus

1.Stress and coping: the stress process, its signes and effects; burnout; psicossocial modifiers  of stress (e.g., social suport, coping strategies and individual differences); stress management, emotional regulation and resilience.

2. Health behaviours and illness behaviours - how to change motivation and behavior: the transtheoretical model of change and the motivational interview; the classic Cognitive-Behavioral approach (based on the paradigms of classical and operant conditioning and social learning and based on cognitive restructuring) and the 3rd Wave approach.

3.Programs to prevent health risk factors (e.g. smoking and obesity) and programs to prevent mental illness (e.g., depression and alcoholism).
