Recommended Prerequisites

History and Epistemology of Psychology, Biological Bases of Behavior, Neuropsychology, Psychopathology: fundamental topics.

Teaching Methods

Expositive and interrogative method, large group discussion, use of audio-visuals for the projection of diagrams with topics of the contents taught.

Role-play and simulation exercises to develop assessment and intervention skills. It is also proposed to conduct researches, in small groups, which are presented and discussed in class.

Ocasionnaly videotapes are presented and discussed about a theme that was taught. 

Learning Outcomes

This curricular unit aims to provide to the students the acquisition of:

1. Knowledge and develop critical thought about the nosologie of abnormal behavior and mental disorder.

2. Knowledge on identification, characterization, diagnose and assessment of the most common mental disorders.

Syllabus

Introduction to psychopathological disorders: clinical description, classification, diagnosis, epidemiology, comorbidity, differential diagnosis, etiology and general notions of treatment; presentation and discussion of clinical cases.

1. Anxiety disorders (e.g. panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia, specific phobias, generalized anxiety disorder) and obsessive-compulsive disorder

2. Mood disorders (e.g. depression)

3. Eating disorders (e.g. anorexia and bulimia)

4. Substance-related disorders (e.g. alcoholism).
