Basic notions on research methodology and data collection techniques.

Teaching Methods

This course is taught in practical and theoretical classes, combining the presentation of the syllabus topics with the resolution of practical exercises, using SPSS software.

Learning Outcomes

The main objective of this course is to help students to understand and use basic statistical techniques to deal with, interpret and present research results based on quantitative techniques for gathering information. The course aims to prepare students to understand the relationship between the operationalization of sociological concepts and the definition of variables suitable for statistical treatment, help them to understand the statistical concepts and linking them to the analysis of sociological variables and also to stimulate them to interpret critically the statistical results.

After attending this course, the student should be able to:

- operate with the SPSS statistical program to develop statistical analysis procedures;

- define and build databases;

- use the key commands that operate on the databases

- use the key commands for statistical treatment;

- analyze the results produced by SPSS;

- draw reports to present the results and their interpretation.

Syllabus

This course focuses primarily on basic statistical procedures, relating to univariate and bivariate analysis, which allow synthesizing and describing quantitative data sets, advancing in the exploration of differences and associations between pairs of variables, testing their statistical significance, according to the different type of variables.

1. From survey to data-base: identification and classification of variables, coding, definition of a SPSS database, data introduction and quality control data;

2. Univariate analysis: frequencies, descriptive statistics and graphical representations;

3. Bivariate analysis: crossing of variables; difference and association tests; regression;

4. Presenting results and drawing reports.
