Recommended Prerequisites

The student must have basic concepts of Mechanics (forces and movement).

Teaching Methods

The theoretical lectures are taught using power-point slides. The teaching experience of the discipline indicates the lack of methodology to approach situations studied, therefore effort is devoted to develop systematic methodologies. In the practical classes the problems proposed are realistic involving daily situations and engineering problems. Some of the problems are solved by the students, to promote independence relatively to the teacher.

Learning Outcomes

Analysis of static problems of rigid body and structures. More specifically, the objective is to identify and characterize the different types of forces, the representation of the force diagram, the analysis of the balance of forces (one rigid body, multi-body and mechanisms) and the application to the study of beams and trusses. In addition, it is intended an understanding of the static mechanisms involving friction (spindles and belts) and the analysis of systems for force multiplication (levers, pulleys, gears). The situations analyzed are preferably located on the Earth's surface, where bodies are subject to its gravitational force and the action of the atmosphere. The approach is essentially analytical, based on Newton's laws, the law of gravitational attraction, and the rigidity of bodies.

Syllabus

1. Fundamental concepts: time, space, matter and energy. 2. Diagram of forces: Study of forces (weight, friction, wires, springs, dampers, fluids at rest and in motion, motors (electric and internal combustion), and hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders), free body diagram. Analysis of mobility. 3. Statics of the particle. 4. Statics of the rigid body. 5. Multi-body-statics. 6. Statics of beams and truses. 7.
