Recommended Prerequisites

The student must have knowledge in the field of Geosciences and related areas, given by frequency with approval in disciplines of the 1st degree in Geology or master's degrees in the area of Geosciences and related areas.

Teaching Methods

An initial expository part but after this phase the teaching method will be exclusively tutorial (permanent interaction between teacher and student). Use of FCTUC's Earth Sciences Department laboratories. Bibliographic research. At the end the student presents a written document that is submitted to public examination.

Learning Outcomes

This unit aims to prepare the student to design a research project on the PhD requirements in Geology, i.e., being unique and original and performed autonomously by the student. The student should develop skills in: a) definition of the problem and the goals to be achieved; b) definition of the work plan and its scheduling; c) definition of the methodologies to be used; d)deepening and developing knowledge about the methodologies and techniques to be used; e) literature review techniques; f) preparation and public presentation of the final document.

Syllabus

Presentation, by the coordinator, of the general structure of a research project, with generic discussion of the various topics that make up a project (definition of the problem / issue, goals to be achieved, bibliography review, work plan, methodologies and timing). After choosing the research theme, students will be referred to their provisional supervisors, for a detailed discussion of the topics mentioned above, adapted to the theme to be developed in the project, the deepening and development of the research methodologies and techniques to be applied and the elaboration of the final document as well as its public presentation.
