Recommended Prerequisites

Although not mandatory, the previous attendance of Animal diversity, Population and Community Ecology, Aquaculture and Fisheries classes is suggested. The course is lectured in Portuguese, so that a good domain of this language is required.

Teaching Methods

Intensive course with 2 weks duration. Lectures: theoretical, theoretical and practical; Teamwork.

Learning Outcomes

Various perspectives on the exploitation of the marine environment will be covered: i) fisheries (characteristics of marine species exploited by fisheries; ii) new methods of intensive farming of species of commercial interest; iii) Fish trade and commodities; iv) Fisheries resources; v) governance and policy; vi) International regulators agencies; vii) fisheries in the EU and and viii) marine biotechnology (discovery, enhancement, innovation and differentiation of marine products). Complementarily, the techniques and methods through which the exploitation of the marine environment can be carried out in an integrated, economically viable way and within the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Objectives will be addressed. Students should be able to identify key economically relevant species and manage their stocks. They should also be able to understand which species have potential for cultivation and which are the main techniques for improving and valueing these products.

Fisheries:

Larval phase - physical drivers, connectivity;

Life cycles of exploited species (migratory, nursery, large and small pelagic species, depth species);

Otoliths - Essential tool for fisheries;

Evolution induced by fisheries - behavior, life history, selection, phenotypic changes, climate change.

Metabolic programming and selection for increased productivity

Advanced aquaculture practices

EU fisheries and marine policy Marine Biotechnology:

Exploration of the marine environment;

Effects and biotechnological applications of marine compounds.
