Recommended Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of geosciences.

Teaching Methods

Workgroups for discussion and thematic presentation. Assistance to seminars and lectures in various institutional contexts. Planning and detailed explanation of methodological steps for the realization of individual exercises, with final work report presentation and verbal forms. Use of statistical methods and projection mapping tools. Use is specific software for self-learning. Tutorial support in answering questions and solving exercises. Methodological discussion on preparing the reports and oral presentation.

Learning Outcomes

It is intended that students develop knowledge of land use planning, management and conservation of natural resources, and sustainable development. The aim is to build epistemologies of knowledge supporting problem analysis, the selection of methods of analysis and techniques and performance. Students should acquire instrumental skills and competences in analysis and synthesis, organization and planning, problem solving, information management and oral and written communication. It is intended that students develop personal competences and skills in work in group and interdisciplinary teams, in critical thinking, communication with other experts, and ethical commitment. It is intended that students acquire competences and skills of independent learning and adapt to new situations, concern for quality and sustainable development, application of theoretical knowledge in practice and self-criticism and self-evaluation.

Syllabus

1 - Basic concepts and historical evolution of land use planning. Territorial units definition. Environmental planning tools. Planning criteria.

2 - Processes and tools in local, regional and national planning. Public involvement in land use definition and planning.

3 - Local and regional geological variables and forcers affecting the regional and municipal planning.

4 - Geological criteria in mitigating impacts associated with the exploitation of mineral and water resources and the definition of conditions related to the geological risks. Geological criteria in studies of environmental impact.

5 - Mapping exercises involving the data collection, processing and geo-referenced information to be applied on territorial management.
