Recommended Prerequisites

The student must have academic knowledge in the area of Geosciences given by attendance, with approval, in curricular units of the 1st cycle in Geology or of 1st cycles from the Geosciences areas and he/she must understand the Portuguese language.

Teaching Methods

Presentation of themes using the expositive methodology in the classroom and field work; bibliographic research.

Learning Outcomes

The objectives of this curricular unit are: 1) to increase and develop student’s knowledge about sedimentary basins as geodynamic entities, namely the methods for the integrated study and the processes of mantle, lithosphere, oceans, atmosphere and land surface that coupled together to shape the basin geometry and its infilled stratigraphy; 2) to develop capacities in acquisition, systematization, interrelation, treatment, interpretation and presentation of data obtained in the integrated study of sedimentary basins.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

Depositional systems and facies models; Integrated stratigraphic analysis; Depositional cycles and sequence stratigraphy; Subsidence, denudation and sedimentary budget; Tectonic types of sedimentary basins and their evolution; Basin analysis; Petroleum systems; Organic matter (typology, methodologies of study and maturation).Case studies (integrated analysis) of peri-Atlantic basins.
