Teaching Methods
relevant linguistic input and with language production opportunities, both oral and written, with corrective feedback. When presenting grammatical topics, the expository method will also be used. Assessment is continuous and based on formative and summative activities of distinct typologies (questionnaires, with immediate feedback, participation in forums and file submission).
Every thematic module will include formative activities.
3 summative evaluation activities will take place:
1- during the second thematic module (30% of the final grade)
2- during the third thematic module (30% of the final grade)
3- during the fourth thematic module (40% of the final grade)
Each module includes synchronous tutoring sessions.
The summative evaluation activities will require oral and written productive and receptive language skills.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
(i) use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes;
(ii) follow a wide range of themes, read and understand long and demanding tests, recognizing implicit meaning;
(iii) express ideas fluently and spontaneously without major hesitations in oral interaction;
(iv) produce clear, well-structured, detailed texts concerning complex subjects;
Express him/herself in writing, in an organized and coherent manner, displaying controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Grammatical syllabus:
1. Review of critical structures
1.1. Uses of verbal tenses and of the nominal forms of verbs.
1.2. Subject/verb agreement.
1.3. Nominal phrase structure and agreement.
1.4. Argument structure of main verbs.
1.5. Subordinate clauses (concessives, relatives introduced by prepositions, conditionals…)
2. Composing texts in Portuguese: lexicon and grammar
2.1. Coreference chains: pronominal anaphora, lexical chains, adverbs; anaphorical null subject.
2.2. Coordinate connectors.
2.3. Subordinate connectors introducing adverbial clauses.
2.4. Textual and discursive connectors.
2.5. Expressing modal and temporal-aspectual values in Portuguese.
3. Relations between lexical and multilexical units (collocations, idioms).
4. Words formation processes.
