Teaching Methods
The course unit will be taught in theoretical and theoretical-practical classes.
The theoretical classes follow essentially an expository model, using the projection of images, and have the purpose of presenting the announced syllabus.
The theoretical-practical classes take place in the form of a collective debate and aim to discuss the themes developed in the Synthesis Works, mandatory for the evaluation.
Learning Outcomes
One of the main learning outcomes expected with this course unit, is to create a critical awareness of the current cultural context of Portuguese architecture, which has its deepest historical root in the thinking produced during the 20th century.
In recent decades, Portuguese architecture has achieved a great international recognition, which arouses enormous curiosity in students throughout the entire cycle of studies.
It is also important to note that the rehabilitation of pre-existing buildings, and its reconstruction for contemporary use, is one of the main themes of current architectural production. Naturally, a large part of the buildings potentially considered to be subjected to that kind of intervention were built throughout the 20th century, and the knowledge of the historical context in which they were originally designed it is crucial for a qualified and culturally conscious intervention.
Work Placement(s)
NoSyllabus
The syllabus of this course unit is based on the analysis of some case studies, like works and authors, and of some crucial themes for the understanding of the cultural transformations that occurred throughout the 20th century, having Modern Architecture as a permanent reference.
Its presentation follows preferably a chronological development, and it is structured according to an organization that can be divided into four modules.
Weak modernity – The first 3 decades of the 20th century, and the 1st generation of Portuguese modern architects.
The affirmation of Modern Architecture – 1940s and 50s, and the 2nd generation of Modern Portuguese Architecture.
Critical revision of the Modern Movement – 1960s and 1970s.
1980s / 1990s – And the contemporary Portuguese architecture, because most of the protagonists of this period are still working.
International cases will be analyzed whenever that is important to contextualize the production of Portuguese architecture.
