Level
2nd Cycle Studies - Mestrado

Recommended Prerequisites

The student should have basic knowledge on physics of constructions.

Teaching Methods

The course is organized in theoretical and theoretico-practical classes. In theoretical lectures the principles are exposed, constructive solutions, materials are presented ans case studies ares discussed .

Practical classes are dedicated to the analysis of practical design situations and the development of a synthesis work, supervised by the teacher. Visits to building works will be organized in order to give an experimental dimension to the topics adressed or sessions with materials and sistems manufacturers.

Learning Outcomes

- To understand the principles of buildings physics that are essential to guarantee comfort, health, fire safety.

- To understand the main principles related to the sustainability of buildings that allow a selection of materials to be used in buildings and a rational use of energy.

- To understand and acquire the design skills related to the definition of adequate constructive sustainable solutions to each particular situation, in what concerns: thermal and energy performance, acoustics and fire safety behaviour of buildings .

- Acquire the knowledge to the establishment of formal dialogue with other specialties within the design activity or in the monitoring of building construction.

Work Placement(s)

Syllabus

1 - Functional requirements of buildings

2 - Thermal confort of buildings: relation between climate and architecture: Passive design of buildings: materials and constructive solutions: bioclimatic architecture and integration of renewable energies;relation between urban planing and thermal confort in buildings;

3 - Acoustic confort of buildings: sound insulation and constructive solutions ofr facades, walls and slabs; influence  of the space distribution on acousric confort: urban noise.

4 - Building safety behaviour facing fire: materials and strategies to consider in the architecture design.
