2nd Cycle Studies - Mestrado
Electronics, Waves and Optics.
The syllabus themes are presented using examples and applications in the field of biomedical engineering. Laboratory classes and experimental demonstrations. Solving (in group and with supervision) engineering problems requiring the joint application of concepts from different syllabus chapters and intensive use of equipment and components data sheets. Mandatory presence in seminars addressing syllabus themes. Discussion of scientific papers related to syllabus topics. Small instrumentation project with public oral presentation. Open book exams.
At the end of this curricular unit, students must:
Know the physical principles and technical features of lasers and light detectors available in the market. Interpret correctly the data sheets produced by manufacturers of lasers and light detectors. Know how to evaluate the irradiance of a scene image and calculate the signal-to-noise ratio of a detected image or optical signal. Know how to calculate the maximum permissible exposure (ocular and skin) and the nominal ocular hazard distance for non-aided and aided observation, for laser radiation, in accordance with the IEC/EN 60825.1 Standard. Know how to specify protection goggles against laser radiation in accordance with the IEC/EN 60825.1 Standard. Know the optical properties of most biological tissues. Know the interaction mechanisms between light and biological tissues. Know the main medical applications of lasers and optical fibres.
