 Knowledge of  Engineering Geology and Soil Mechanics. 

Teaching Methods

Lectures with exposure of the subject to be taught.
- Classes for silving problems involving the earthworks and soil compaction.
- Visits to ongoing works which were designed / applied techniques in order to improve the characteristics of soil/rocks/rock masses (slopes and underground works) and foundation (dams, consolidation and waterproofing curtains).

Learning Outcomes

Each student should carry out  detailed knowledge about:
- Design and construction of earthworks;
- Improving the characteristics of the soils and rocks/rock masses.

Syllabus

Earthworks: definition, project specifications of roadworks. Landfill: structure; stability; classification of landfills and materials. Earthmoving machinery. Construction methods. Remove with mechanical means and explosives. Quality control: field and laboratory. Manufacture and application of aggregates; local research. Contract works construction charge: Roads; earth and rockfill dams.

Rockbolts and anchorages.
Geotextiles: definition; classification; properties; functions; applications; design methods; specifications. Water as geotechnical condition: hydrogeological characterization for engineering works; pumping; surface and deep drainage. Preload and vertical drains. Electro-osmose.Vibrocompaction. Vibrosubstitution. Dynamic compaction. Diaphragm walls. Thin curtains. Injections. Jet grouting. Reinforced earth. Containment and reinforcement.
