Teaching Methods

The Thesis Project is a tutorial course in nature guided by supervisors with a PhD degree. The PhD candidate will produce periodical reports on his work at dates decided by the supervisors. PhD students are encouraged to submit their results in international conferences and in international scientific journals.

Learning Outcomes

To prepare and defend a thesis on an innovative research topic, developing the following competences, skills and research methods:

- Ability to systematic understanding in the field of Forest Sciences;

- Ability to make critical analysis, to evaluate and to synthesize new and complex ideas;

- Ability to use appropriate research methods, considering the legal and high ethical standards and academic quality and integrity requirements;

- Ability to conduct research that will contribute to expanding the frontiers of knowledge and deserve disclosure in peered reviewed scientific publications;

- Ability to communicate with their peers, and the academic community and society in general on the specialized area of the work;

- Ability to promote, in academic or professional contexts, technological, social or cultural progress.

Syllabus

- To develop an innovative and deep research work;

- To prepare a final written document (thesis) that clearly shows the objectives to be achieved, the description(s) of problems(s) intended to solve, the potential of the thesis (contribution to fill the gaps in the scientific area), the state of the art (critical review), the experimental plan, including used techniques, methodologies and supporting tools, the presentation of the obtained results and their detailed and supported discussion, including their ethical and social implications, the main conclusions and the bibliography. It must also include an abstract in Portuguese and an abstract in English.

- To defend the work facing a jury.

The research topic is proposed by the supervisors (one from UC and one from UTAD), but the professional interests of the students may be taken into account.
