Recommended Prerequisites

Very good knowledge of Portuguese and at least one foreign language. Knowledge of English to enable access to bibliography.

Teaching Methods

Discussion of theoretical issues based on student presentations of relevant themes and articles.

Film and documentary viewing and listening to recorded speeches, conferences, etc, in real contexts of consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.

Lectures and practical consecutive and simultaneous interpreting oriented exercises.

Practical specialized exercises for simultaneous interpreting.

If possible, participation in events with interpreting services in real contexts.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester students will:

1. Be able to identify the main characteristics of conference interpreting and recognize the most important similarities and differences between translation and interpreting, using and complementing the knowledge acquired in the Translation Theory and Introduction to Simultaneous Interpreting seminars;

2. Be familiar with conference interpreting techniques and more aware of the problems concerning inter-linguistic exchanges;

3. Have had contact with the implementation of conference interpreting techniques in the context of real events.

a) Main characteristics of conference interpreting as an activity/profession.

b) Tools and techniques for conference interpreting.

c) Preparatory exercises for interpreting: practice of research strategies and techniques, oral discourse analysis, note-taking and oral expression.

d) Concentration, memory, synthesis, reformulation and improvisation exercises.

e) Interpreting activities in the classroom, lab and booth.
