Recommended Prerequisites

1st year of the Master's program and beginning of the research work for the Dissertation.

Teaching Methods

The student, guided by the supervisor, chooses one of the topics in the Syllabus (or another, subject to approval) related to his/her research project and writes a short essay (maximum two A4 pages) on the subject.

The topics are presented and discussed by students in a workshop on Research Challenges in Cell Biology and Biomedicine.

Learning Outcomes

To raise the awareness among students about the implications, limits and challenges of their own research work, and of the scientific research in Cell Biology and Biomedicine in general: ethical issues; translational potential and limitations; how technology developments and multidisciplinarity impact the advancement of knowledge.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

Animal experimentation: need; how to minimize the use and suffering of animals; regulations.

Translational research: what is it; phases of development of a new drug from the study of the mechanisms of action to the clincal trials; extrapolation of studies in animal models to human effects; key importance of statistical power analysis.

Technology and the advancement of knowledge in Biology and Biomedicine.
