Recommended Prerequisites

Students must have a strong background in structural mechanics and dynamic structural analysis.

Teaching Methods

Classes run under theoretical and practical. In the classes are presented the theoretical concepts and the code formulations for the structural design. Simultaneously, some illustrative examples are solved. Students participate actively in the process of formation, being asked to present solutions to the proposed problems. Occasionally students are invited to attend lectures by visiting specialists. Tutorial lessons (37.5 hours) will be to answer questions.

Learning Outcomes

The aim of this curricular unit (CU) is the analysis and design of support structures for wind turbines, addressing in detail the specific behavior of offshore steel structures, whether they are used for wind turbines or for oil industry

This CU is conceived in order to give students following competencies:

- load analysis and the dynamic/ hydrodynamic effects on the structures.

- design for instability, fatigue and corrosion phenomena in very aggressive environment.

- knowledge on how to calculate structural resistance combining Eurocodes and specific codes for wind energy structures and offshore structures.

- Knowledge in how to performed FE analysis and interpret obtained results

- basics of structural manufacturing and maintenance of wind towers and offshore platforms.
