Synchronous and asynchronous motors.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with presentation of concepts, principles and fundamental theories on the taught matter. Besides the theoretical aspects, these classes include solving of practical exercises that illustrate the application of the covered concepts to real situations, requiring the combination of different theoretical concepts and also promoting the critical spirit when facing complex problems. Individual research and simulation works are also performed, in order to consolidate the matters addressed in the course, as well as to reinforce the perception of their applicability/importance.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to evaluate the efficiency and the reliability of the industrial electric motor driven systems, to know and to understand the operation principles of the main electric motors, to know the most relevant international standard in the scope of electric motors and drives and to identify the main technical and economic advantages/disadvantages of the different technological options available in the market. The student has to be able to properly select an electric motor/drive, including the starting and protection system. The student should also know the main maintenance strategies used in industry and the procedures underlying the corrective maintenance of three-phase induction motors, including the redesign of three-phase stator windings.
