Teaching Methods

Teaching will be based on lectures (carried out with and without support of multimedia presenters) complemented with short problem solving sessions to further the understanding of the syllabus major topics. In addition there will be laboratory classes in which the students will have to complete practical assignments dealing mostly with the programming and testing of audio and video compression experiments.

Learning Outcomes

The main objective of this unit is to provide the student with a reasonably complete body of knowledge on the scientific fundaments and technologies involved in the processing and transmission of audio, speech, image and video signals. The first section deals with the perception, representation and compression of audio signals, including a study of some widespread standardized audio codecs. The second section introduces concepts about visual information perception and representation, including the methods and technologies used to compress image and video signals. The third section exposes the problems posed by the transmission of digitally encoded multimedia over state of the art links and networks in different application scenarios like streaming over IP networks, broadcasting of audio and video and videoconferencing. The evaluation and provisioning of the final perceived quality of the transmitted multimedia signals under consideration will also be discussed.
