Optical Communication Systems
2nd Cycle Studies - Mestrado
Computer Networks; Fundamentals of Communication Systems
38 hours of theoretical and practical lectures, 18 hours of practical and laboratorial sessions.
Laboratory/ practical work: characterization of optical fibres, devices (photodetectors, light emitting diodes and lasers) and photonic subsystems (transmitters and receivers); test of optical fibre communication systems with intensity modulation and direct detection; computational simulation; case studies with Matlab.
Detailed knowledge about devices and functional units used in communication systems with optical fibre transmission, and about the methods used in the design of optical communication systems. Architecture aspects of optical tansport and access networks will also be covered. After attending this curricular unit, the students should have acquired the fundamental scientific knowledge and technical skills required for the design and development of those systems, and should be capable of understanding and following the scientific and technological evolution in this domain.
Functional structure and classification of optical communication systems. Optical fibres. Optical sources and transmitters. Optical detectors and receivers. Design of optical communication systems with direct detection. Optical amplifiers. Optical communication systems with multiple channels. Coherent optical communication systems. Optical technology applied to the transpot and access network.
