Communication Networks Engineering
2nd Cycle Studies - Mestrado
Basic mathematics knowledge; logical thinking ability and abstraction ; good level of English language.
The topics of the syllabus will be presented in detail, in terms of fundamental concepts and principles, complemented by the resolution of practical exercises that will help the students in consolidating their knowledge. Computational works on the different topics of the syllabus will be performed by the students, who will be required to implement simple teletraffic models and system simulations.
With this curricular unit, the students are expected to learn about the organization of a communication network. Another goal is the study of basic mathematical models of teletraffic systems theory, so that the students may be able to analyse the quality of service (QoS) and solve dimensioning problems in telecommunication systems and networks. The students are expected to acquire knowledge on reliability and availability issues in networks. Different recovery mechanisms will be studied, along with their advantages and disadvantages. The students are also expected to learn about network simulation, which will be applied to the different subjects of the curricular unit.
1. Introduction to the architecture of communication networks
2. Performance models for networks with loss and queues
3. Topics of reliability in communication networks
4. Network recovery
5. Basic simulation concepts.
