Recommended Prerequisites

All units at Architecture and Archaeology masters.

Historical and theoretical knowledge of territorial planning and urbanism.

Skills in analysis, synthesis, organization and strategic planning.

Teaching Methods

Practical tutorial lectures for developing individual design proposals. There are, as well, group tutorials in which students debate a collective strategy.

Theoretical-practical classes, in which concepts, theories and founding principles are presented and discussed in order to support the heritage thematic proposals that students develop. Trips, fieldtrips of study into the areas of architectural intervention, are important teaching methods in this area.

A particular relevance is given to the organization of the individual design process.

Learning Outcomes

"Archaeology and territory design" is a design course on architeture and archaeology in which a specific design exercise is developed by cooperation between architects and archaeologists. This unit provides materials for the final master thesis of the programme, through a shared reflection on project design strategies in heritage areas.

This Design Studio develops students’ skills about the architectural and archaeological professions and their role in society, mainly through the realization of design projects that take into account the social factors, the contextual interpretation of architectural and archaeological sites, the development of technical skills that will allow a design intervention in accordance with user demands, the knowledge of procedures implied on the integration of architectural and archaeological projects within general management and heritage preservation plans, and the capacity to communicate the design project through drawings, writings and oral.

Syllabus

"Archaeology and territory design" is a project design course that establishes specific relationships between architectural typologies and the historic evolution of urban morphologies through studies on architecture and archaeology.

In this course students organized as study groups are invited to develop a general strategy of intervention in specific locations, through studying the site’s geography, topography, orography, archaeology, historic transformation and the role of architectural heritage as well as the heritage protection and architectural and archaeological programs for a sustainable development.

Particular importance is given to the design process that results from several studies taken along the semester such as: information and debate about theories of restauration, best practice study cases, adequacy of materialization to the site context constructive systems and materials, production of graphic elements and models.
