Recommended Prerequisites
Prior recommended Curricular Units: especifically Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical and Surgical Propedeutics; students must have knowledge of English language (reading).
Teaching Methods
According to the FMUC´s official plan, which includes 32 hours of contact, teaching methodologies are distributed by theoretical-practical classes (24h), and tutorial orientation in the nursery, operative room, and pediatric surgical urgency (8h). Regarding outpatient Pediatric Surgery consultation, this component is already available in the"Estágio de Saúde Infantil".
Learning Outcomes
To know and understand the clinical semiology of current and /or severe, but preventable or treatable entities in pediatric surgery. To adapt the generic surgical principles to the child. To know the criteria of reference for the specialty of pediatric surgery. To be able to perform basic surgical gestures used for the management of children with surgical disease.

Specifities of pediatric and neonatal surgery. Surgical perinatalogy: manifestations and attitudes in apparent congenital malformations. Referral to pediatric surgery of abdominal wall pathology, neck and thorax pathology, gastrointestinal diseases and urogenital pathology. Epidemiology and initial care of the child victim of trauma. Epidemiology and initial care of the burned child (1st dressing and dressings in the outpatient clinic). General notions about basic procedures in minor surgery, and suture training in a simulated model. Learning of useful procedures in pediatric urgency (inguinal hernia desincarceration, testicular destortion, paraphimosis reduction, recognition of pneumothorax, and training of thoracentesis / thoracic drainage in a simulated model). General knowledge on common minimally invasive procedures in pediatric surgery. Exposure to surgical ambiances (operating room, surgical pediatric surgery emergency room, and nursery).
