Recommended Prerequisites

Biomaterials, Cell and Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology, Fundamentals of Imaging for Diagnosis and Therapeutics, Tissue Engineering.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical classes: oral exposition, using audiovisual support materials and internet access. Theoretical concepts will be accompanied and supported by application examples and case studies.

Laboratorial classes: activities pre-preparation, teaching supervision on laboratorial tasks/procedures. Students organized in groups. Laboratorial demonstrations on some selected issues, to be performed by teachers with the help of research students. Tutorial supervision for other propoesed tasks and projects. Special seminars will be scheduled which will be presented by specialist guest lecturers.

Learning Outcomes

This course serves as an introductory description and as a critical assessment of the major issues related to the use of Nanotechnologies on the development of more efficient and innovative pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. By using structure-size-property-application relationships, students will acquire the required theoretical knowledge to understand all the involved inter- and multidisciplinary issues associated to the development of nanostructured biomaterials for uses as nanomedicines, diagnostic/theranostic systems (in vivo, in vitro, POC's), and implantable materials/devices (biodegradable and non-biodegradable). Other nanobiomaterials relevant topics will be covered such as functionalization/bioconjugation of nanobiomaterials (bulk/surface), smart and stimuli-responsive nanobiomaterials, nanometrology, nanotoxicity, regulation and translation to the clinic.

Theoretical component: introduction to nanobiomaterials (biomaterials: definitions, types, properties, applications; nanoscale, nansciences and nanotechnologies; properties and applications of nanostructured materials; nanobiomaterials: the "bright" and "dark" sides); development of nanobiomaterials (current applications and issues, nanostructures and nanoparticles used in pharmaceutical and biomedical applications, 1D, 2D and 3D structures, micro-, meso- and macroporous structures, nanostructured surfaces, examples of polymeric, metallic, inorganic, hybrid and composite nanobiomaterials preparation, functionalization/bioconjugation of nanobiomaterials; smart and stimuli-responsive nanobiomaterials); applications of nanobiomaterials (pharmaceutical applications - nanomedicines, diagnostics and theranostics applications (in vivo, in vitro, biosensors, POC's), implantable materials/devices - biodegradable or non-biodegradable).
