Recommended Prerequisites

Calculus, Linear Algebra and Analytic Geometry.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with the help of audiovisual media where concepts, principles and theories are presented in detail. Practical exercises that meet all the needs of students are solved, with guidelines provided, and use of adequate software. Assessment of students involves the undertaking of individual assignments including the production and hand-in of the respective reports, and oral presentation subjected to questions where knowledge transmitted during the course is also evaluated.

Learning Outcomes

To encourage the development of a systems perspective for intelligent planning and management of mobility engineering systems; to provide students with  scientific methodologies and quantitative tools of great value for decision-making and rational resource use in mobility engineering.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

Optimization and decison-making in the transportation sector. Decision processes in in the transportation. Optimization topics: linear programming and extensions; network problems modelling with applications in transportation and mobility; multiobjective modelling. Combinatorial problems: heuristic approaches; introduction to meta-heuristic approaches. Application to transport infrastructure planning; routing; vehicle and crew schedulling; infrastructure design and expansion.

Formal evaluation techniques in transportation and mobility engineering problems: transportation energy evaluation and sustainable mobility (energy sources and environmental impacts, energy requirement associated to transportation modes and respective calculation, well-to-wheel and tank-to-wheel analysis), engineering economics, environmental evaluation, cost-benefit analysis (CBA), life-cycle analysis (LFA), multicriteria/multiattribute evaluation. Applications to practical problems.
