Compulsory
2nd Cycle Studies - Mestrado
Recommended Prerequisites
Basic knowledge in Biology (Physiology, Ecology, Cell and Molecular Biology) at a BSc level.
Teaching Methods
Presentations and informal discussions with researchers inserted in research centers will be organized, where student participation will be valued. Thematic modules will be organized with several researchers from different centers, chosen for their dynamism and ability to communicate. Students will be assessed by conducting discussions organized around different projects, short presentations and mini-tests.
Learning Outcomes
The goal is to introduce students to burning research issues in Biology in an integrated and realistic manner, using actual ongoing projects. Students should acquire skills in identifying and classifying different types of projects, and realize how they are organized, including the formulation of hypotheses, choice of methods, advantages and limitations of different types of models and approaches, the purpose of multidisciplinary teams, and interpretation of results.
Work Placement(s)
NoSyllabus
The course will be organized in conjunction with research centers linked to DCV active in various areas of biology, and with which the Department collaborates on post-graduate teaching. Examples include, among others, the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE), the Center for Neuroscience and Biology (CNC), the Research Centre for Anthropology and Health (CIAS), or the Center for Marine and Environmental Sciences (MARE).
Interdisciplinary modules will be created in which different topics will be approached from different perspectives, from molecule to man and the environment, by researchers from different centers. The topics will be consensually defined for each academic year by the teachers involved to allow permanent updates. Examples include: obesity; aging; antimicrobial agents and antibiotic resistance; food production and genetically modified organisms; sequencing and genetic data; drug development and regenerative medicine.
