Recommended Prerequisites

Previous knowledge of Physiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry and Cell and Molecular Biology (Masters level)

Teaching Methods

Lectures, paper discussions, individual and group exercises, presentation of discussion of projects in the different fields covered in the syllabus. Evalution will be permanently ongoing with different sorts of methodologies, suggested by the teachers involved in each module..

Learning Outcomes

The students will both acquire and develop skills in terms of autonomous high-quality scientific research. They should be able to adapt to novel circumstances resulting from multiple- inter- and transdisciplinary advanced courses in different subjects and taught by lecturers with different presentation styles. Students are expected to be proficient in the different specialized languages characteristic for each sub-field, and be able to use multiple approaches in problem-solving. While the Molecular and Cell Biology Course provides initial training, this course will focus on current basic research in the field, while BEBII will be more translational in nature. One important goal is exposing students to fields where they will eventually develop their thesis projects.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

This Course exposes students to cutting-edge research in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine. Particular attention will be given to to Basic Research, including the use of several cell and animal models, the development of novel research strategies and therapeutic targets, as well as molecular, biochemical and celular parameters and biomarkers which may be harnessed for research and diagnostic purposes. The class will be organized in several intensive 3-10 day modules, with rotating lectures by all staff, plus foreign invited lecturers.

Bibliography

Publicações científicas selecionadas, que variarão consoante a área e o avanço do conhecimento. Dada a natureza do Programa a bibliografia será composta sobretudo por artigos, já que não existem livros de texto adequados a este nível de ensino.

Selected recent publications in International Scientific Journals, which will change yearly according to advances in the field, and with emerging discoveries.
