Teaching Methods

Group discussion and conferences focusing the broad interdisciplinary practices, methodologies and tools already available for the analysis of contemporary artistic culture convey the required rationale for the preparation and structuring of the thesis project.
2-Specific theoretical papers will be forwarded previously to the weekly sessions where PhD students will be invited to engage on a dialogue fostering both their theoretical assessment of the given bibliography as well as their own professional practice.

Learning Outcomes

This seminar proposes an interdisciplinary and participative educational setting where the PhD student can understand the variety of standpoints (artistic, historical, philosophical, political, anthropological, sociological, architectural) and methodological procedures available for the development of her/his doctoral research. At the end of the seminar the doctoral student should be able to:
1. Problematize contemporary art subjects without relying exclusively on conventional data; strengthen the development of original thought and independent inquiry.
2. Understand the processes of cross-knowledge transfer that define the relationship between contemporary art making and scholar investigation.
3. Develop a critical judgment of his own professional practice assessing the impact factor of his theoretical research in the development and outcome of her/his professional work.
4. Engage his research in a broad cross disciplinary discussion with artists, scholars and students.

Syllabus

This seminar is organized into the following key topics:

1) A participatory learning experience promoting the intersection of innovative art practices with thought- provoking academic research. This will be achieved through:

Focusing on the broad interdisciplinary practices, methodologies and tools already available for the analysis of contemporary artistic culture. 

PhD students will be invited to engage and discuss with their colleagues and Seminar teacher methodological and thematic questions of their PhD project. 


2) Student’s participation on conferences held by scholars from art research, art museums and  art education institutions.


3)  Student’s involvement in the activities developed and displayed in the experimental environment of both the Colégio das Artes Galllery and its online art projects. 


4) At the end of the semester, students will present and discuss their PhD project with an evaluation panel in a public session.

Assessment Methods

Assessment
At the end of the semester, students will present their PhD project through an extensive written report that should not exceed 25 000 characters and should cover a set of detailed references to the dissertation theme, the state of the art and specific bibliography. This PhD project will be introduced to an evaluation panel and discussed in a public session: 100.0%
