Teaching Methods

1) Theoretical exposure regarding the knowledge, discussion, adaptation and confrontation of models and research practices.
2) Presentation of artistic practices and curator’s experiences from the main exhibition and arts centers both in Portugal and abroad.
3) Exchange of experiences correlated to the specificities of the artistic practices which were previously analyzed or carried out.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the seminar, students must:
1) Be familiar with the research and the reflection developed both
in Portugal and abroad, in specific fields of Contemporary Art.
2) Be able to identify the activity and the program of the main exhibition and arts centers both in Portugal and abroad. 3) Know how to conceptualize and question the relation between critical approach and artistic practices.
4) Know how to adapt the means available to the aims to be achieved in terms of investigation, in order to support the thesis’ project.

Syllabus

This seminar is based on three moments:
1) Presentation to the Ph D students about a set of research themes on Contemporary Art:
a) the specificities of scientific research on Contemporary Art.
b) Formulation of goals and reflection on the problematic.
c) Identification of the methodology and types of research: rules and models, theoretical frameworks.
2) Participation in the Lecture Series "As Artes do Colégio" on which lectures from critics, investigators, curators and artists will be held. Interaction with the speakers.
3) Participation on the activities of the Galeria do Colégio das Artes: exhibitions, performances, installations, shows, movies projections.
