Teaching Methods

Students will read and discuss literary and historical texts as well as newspaper articles compatible with level B2 on the topic “La mafia e l’Italia”. Films and other audiovisual materials in Italian will be used in class. With the help of the instructor, students will make presentations and participate in debates and discussions.

Learning Outcomes

Reading, conversation and writing will be emphasized in this course, with the aim of improving students skills in Italian and their ability to participate in discussions and make oral presentations.At the end of the course, students will be able to work in a more autonomous manner with texts in Italian and also develop more confidence in pronunciation and spelling, acquiring skills corresponding to CEFR level B2.1.

Syllabus

1.Pronunciation and spelling
Accents and word stress; velar and palatal sounds; double vs. single consonants
2.Morphosyntactic structures
-revision of pronominal particles ci/ne & pronominal verbs
-revision of conjugation and use in the active and reflexive voice of regular, irregular and modal verbs in the indicative (presente, passato prossimo, imperfetto, trapassato prossimo, passato remoto, futuro semplice e anteriore), conditional (presente e passato), subjunctive (presente, imperfetto, passato e trapassato), infinitive (presente e passato) and imperative tenses
-subordinate clauses that use the subjunctive
-use of the gerund, past and present participle
-revision & analysis of the syntax of simple and complex sentences
-revision of concordance of verb tenses expressing conditions
-changing direct to indirect speech
3.Vocabulary and culture
The topic “La mafia e l’Italia” will be the primary basis for exploring vocabulary and culture, as well as developing conversation skills

Continuous assessment
Continuous assessment includes the following: an essay (min. 350 words) on the topic chosen for the class; a 20-minute oral presentation; a final test on grammar: 100.0%
