Teaching Methods

Students will read and discuss literary and historical texts as well as newspaper articles compatible with level B2 on the topic “Viaggio in Italia con Giovanni Boccaccio ed il Decamerone”. Films and other audiovisual materials in Italian will be used in class. With the help of the instructor, students will make presentations and participate in debates and discussions.

Learning Outcomes

Reading, conversation and writing will be emphasized in this course, with the aim of improving students’ skills in Italian and their ability to participate in discussions and make oral presentations, thus becoming independent users of the language.

At the end of the course, students will be able to work in a more autonomous manner with texts in Italian and also develop more confidence in pronunciation and spelling, acquiring skills corresponding approximately to CEFR level B2.1.

1.Pronunciation and spelling
Accents and word stress; velar and palatal sounds; double vs. single consonants
2.Morphosyntactic structures
-indefinite pronouns & adjectives
-revision of combined pronouns
-pronominal particles ci/ne
-revision of conjugation and use in the active and reflexive voice of regular and irregular verbs and modal verbs in the indicative, conditional, subjunctive, infinitive and imperative tenses
-use of the passive
-impersonal verbs
-most frequent adverbs of opinion and doubt
-coordinating copulative, adversative, disjunctive and conclusive clauses
-subordinate temporal, causal, final, concessive and consecutive clauses
-concordance of verb tenses expressing conditions
-discourse markers for the production of argumentative, expository and narrative texts
3.Vocabulary and culture
The topic “Viaggio in Italia con Giovanni Boccaccio ed il Decamerone” will be the primary basis for exploring vocabulary and culture, as well as developing conversation skills

Continuous assessment
Continuous assessment includes the following: a written presentation (min. 350 words) on the topic chosen for the class; a 20-minute oral presentation; a final test on grammar: 100.0%
